Cornell University overlooks Cayuga Lake, and many gorges and waterfalls are just steps from the Law School. Schedule a Law School or campus tour here.
Ithaca weather allows for a variety of outdoor activities, ranging from boating, swimming, and hiking in the summer to cross-country skiing and ice skating in the winter.
When taking a break from your studies you can jog or bike on trails in one of Ithaca’s local or state parks. Enjoy wine tasting year-round and apple picking in the fall. Rent a kayak or take sailing lessons on Cayuga Lake. Visit an organic winery or farm. Or head eight miles north to Taughannock Falls, the tallest waterfall in the northeast. There’s no end to the ways you can explore and get active.
It’s not uncommon to run into friends, neighbors, professors, or fellow students on any downtown street. Ithaca has more restaurants per capita than New York City, and it attracts diners from all around the world. Ithaca was recognized as one of the “foodiest” towns in the U.S. by Bon Appetit magazine. Ithaca is home to the famous Moosewood Restaurant, whose award-winning vegetarian cookbooks attract diners from around the country.

According to a local bumper sticker, “Ithaca is gorges”, and most people here would agree.
Located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Ithaca is surrounded by waterfalls, gorges, lakes, and parks. With a four-season climate and close access to kite sailing, skiing, skating, mountain biking, hiking, polo, canoeing, windsurfing, and other sports, Ithaca is an ideal place for getting outside.

Sledding is one of Ithacans all-time favorite winter sports! Get a sled, find any hill in Ithaca, and go. Local favorites include Cornell Plantations and Taughannock Park. **Avoid Libe Slope, as it is dangerous and against Cornell regulations to sled down.

Nightlife
As a college town with a thriving local music scene, Ithaca has a wide variety of clubs and bars. Whether you feel like going for a few drinks or dancing all night, the list below will give you some ideas on what to do and where to go.

Live music and DJ’s and drink specials. Go to 80’s night on Saturdays for the most fun dancing in Ithaca!

Great pub food and great live Irish music weekly.

Getting to Ithaca
Ithaca is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Natural beauty surrounds the campus with its many gorges, lakes, and parks. In fact, the Law School is bordered by Cascadilla Gorge. Its waterfalls and trail lead to downtown Ithaca.
Ithaca is easily accessible by plane, bus, and car. Most major Northeastern cities are a reasonable drive or a short flight.

In honor of Pride Month, we want to recognize all the great work being done in the LGBT Practicum, who back in February, led two days of LGBT law clinics at the Q Center in Syracuse. Practicum students worked in teams of two to conduct information gathering dialogs with clients and documenting their legal needs. Students then helped clients complete all the necessary paperwork — including petitions, complaints, orders, certifications, and more — and in some cases filed it that same day. From a very young age, Lisa Vigilante was taught the importance of giving back. When Vigilante was a sophomore at Cornell University, she took a labor law class with Professor Kate Griffith, where she realized “giving back” might actually be her calling.
She became a 3+3 student, which is where an undergraduate student is given the chance to study as a 1L at Cornell Law School during what would have been their senior year, allowing them to receive their bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees in six years, rather than seven.
Now headed into her 3L year this upcoming fall semester, Vigilante is one of fourteen students in the 3+3 program at the Law School currently, which is less than 10 percent of the Class of 2025. Entrance into this program is no small achievement, but for the students who do enter, it can be the reward of a lifetime! Cornell Law School is dramatically increasing its support for graduates pursuing public service careers, setting a new standard among the nation’s top law schools. Beginning in June 2024, Cornell Law will increase the salary cap eligible for full reimbursement for federal loans from $80,000 to $120,000 for graduates in public service jobs. Further, Cornell Law will also offer partial reimbursements for those with salaries between $120,000 and $150,000. Depending on the circumstances, the plan may eliminate the entirety of law school debt for some graduates. Click the link in our bio for more information!

Raised in Oklahoma, and a citizen of the Muscogee Creek Nation, Carolyn Click, J.D. `24, always wanted to go the distance and shatter the stereotypes that many Indigenous people face. Graduating this year, Click feels a responsibility after law school to not only advance herself, but her community as well! She has been awarded the honor of being a J.D. Degree Marshall at Cornell University’s main graduation ceremony in late May—blowing the doors wide open for more students like herself to contribute to the ever-growing Indigenous legacy here at Cornell!

"The advanced Campus Mediation Practicum has given me the opportunity to strengthen my mediation skills in a professional context and challenged me to reconsider my perspective about the purpose and impact of conflict resolution. Through the practicum, I have mentored students across various departments, actively participated in Cornell University`s broader conflict resolution apparatus, and trained to become certified as a court-appointed mediator in the state of Montana. The teaching and learning opportunities as a mentor have inspired me to set the professional example I hope to encounter in the legal workplace and beyond."
